Once in a dream I saw the flowersA
That bud and bloom in ParadiseB
More fair they are than waking eyesC
Have seen in all this world of oursA
And faint the perfume bearing roseD
And faint the lily on its stemE
And faint the perfect violetF
Compared with themE
-
I heard the songs of ParadiseB
Each bird sat singing in his placeG
A tender song so full of graceG
It soared like incense to the skiesC
Each bird sat singing to his mateH
Soft cooing notes among the treesI
The nightingale herself were coldJ
To such as theseI
-
I saw the fourfold River flowK
And deep it was with golden sandL
It flowed between a mossy landL
With murmured music grave and lowK
It hath refreshment for all thirstM
For fainting spirits strength and restN
Earth holds not such a draught as thisO
From east to westN
-
The Tree of Life stood budding thereP
Abundant with its twelvefold fruitsQ
Eternal sap sustains its rootsQ
Its shadowing branches fill the airP
Its leaves are healing for the worldR
Its fruit the hungry world can feedS
Sweeter than honey to the tasteT
And balm indeedS
-
I saw the gate called BeautifulU
And looked but scarce could look withinV
I saw the golden streets beginV
And outskirts of the glassy poolW
Oh harps oh crowns of plenteous starsX
O green palm branches many leavedS
Eye hath not seen nor ear hath heardS
Nor heart conceivedS
-
I hope to see these things againY
But not as once in dreams by nightS
To see them with my very sightS
And touch and handle and attainZ
To have all Heaven beneath my feetS
For narrow way that once they trodS
To have my part with all the saintsA2
And with my GodS
