Johnny had a golden headA
Like a golden mop in blowB
Right and left his curls would spreadA
In a glory and a glowB
And they framed his honest faceC
Like stray sunbeams out of placeC
-
Long and thick they half could hideD
How threadbare his patched jacket hungE
They used to be his Mother's prideD
She praised them with a tender tongueE
And stroked them with a loving fingerF
That smoothed and stroked and loved to lingerF
-
On a doorstep Johnny satG
Up and down the street looked heH
Johnny did not own a hatG
Hot or cold tho' days might beH
Johnny did not own a bootI
To cover up his muddy footJ
-
Johnny's face was pale and thinK
Pale with hunger and with cryingL
For his Mother lay withinK
Talked and tossed and seemed a dyingL
While Johnny racked his brains to thinkM
How to get her help and drinkM
-
Get her physic get her teaH
Get her bread and something niceN
Not a penny piece had heH
And scarce a shilling might sufficeN
No wonder that his soul was sadO
When not one penny piece he hadO
-
As he sat there thinking mopingL
Because his Mother's wants were manyH
Wishing much but scarcely hopingL
To earn a shilling or a pennyH
A friendly neighbor passed him byP
And questioned him Why did he cryP
-
Alas his trouble soon was toldQ
He did not cry for cold or hungerF
Though he was hungry both and coldQ
He only felt more weak and youngerF
Because he wished so to be oldQ
And apt at earning pence or goldQ
-
Kindly that neighbor was but poorR
Scant coin had he to give or lendS
And well he guessed there needed moreT
Than pence or shillings to befriendS
The helpless woman in her straitU
So much loved yet so desolateV
-
One way he saw and only oneW
He would he could not give the adviceN
And yet he must the widow's sonW
Had curls of gold would fetch their priceN
Long curls which might be clipped and soldQ
For silver or perhaps for goldQ
-
Our Johnny when he understoodX
Which shop it was that purchased hairY
Ran off as briskly as he couldX
And in a trice stood cropped and bareY
Too short of hair to fill a locketZ
But jingling money in his pocketV
-
Precious money tea and breadA
Physic ease for Mother dearA2
Better than a golden headA
Yet our hero dropped one tearY
When he spied himself close shornB2
Barer much than lamb new bornB2
-
His Mother throve upon the moneyH
Ate and revived and kissed her sonW
But oh when she perceived her JohnnyH
And understood what he had doneW
All and only for her sakeC2
She sobbed as if her heart must breakC2
