Helen Grey Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDDC AEEAFGGF AHHAAIIA

Because one loves you Helen GreyA
Is that a reason you should poutB
And like a March wind veer aboutB
And frown and say your shrewish sayA
Don't strain the cord until it snapsC
Don't split the sound heart with your wedgeD
Don't cut your fingers with the edgeD
Of your keen wit you may perhapsC
-
Because you're handsome Helen GreyA
Is that a reason to be proudE
Your eyes are bold your laugh is loudE
Your steps go mincing on their wayA
But so you miss that modest charmF
Which is the surest charm of allG
Take heed you yet may trip and fallG
And no man care to stretch his armF
-
Stoop from your cold height Helen GreyA
Come down and take a lowlier placeH
Come down to fill it now with graceH
Come down you must perforce some dayA
For years cannot be kept at bayA
And fading years will make you oldI
Then in their turn will men seem coldI
When you yourself are nipped and greyA
