Child's Talk In April Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

I wish you were a pleasant wrenA
And I your small accepted mateB
How we'd look down on toilsome menA
We'd rise and go to bed at eightB
Or it may be not quite so lateB
-
Then you should see the nest I'd buildC
The wondrous nest for you and meD
The outside rough perhaps but filledC
With wool and down ah you should seeD
The cosey nest that it would beD
-
We'd have our change of hope and fearE
Small quarrels reconcilements sweetF
I'd perch by you to chirp and cheerE
Or hop about on active feetF
And fetch you dainty bits to eatF
-
We'd be so happy by the dayG
So safe and happy through the nightH
We both should feel and I should sayG
It's all one season of delightH
And we'll make merry whilst we mayG
-
Perhaps some day there'd be an eggI
When spring had blossomed from the snowJ
I'd stand triumphant on one legI
Like chanticleer I'd almost crowJ
To let our little neighbors knowJ
-
Next you should sit and I would singK
Through lengthening days of sunny springK
Till if you wearied of the taskL
I'd sit and you should spread your wingK
From bough to bough I'd sit and baskL
-
Fancy the breaking of the shellM
The chirp the chickens wet and bareN
The untried proud paternal swellM
And you with housewife matron airN
Enacting choicer bills of fareN
-
Fancy the embryo coats of downO
The gradual feathers soft and sleekP
Till clothed and strong from tail to crownO
With virgin warblings in their beakP
They too go forth to soar and seekP
-
So would it last an April throughQ
And early summer fresh with dewQ
Then should we part and live as twainR
Love time would bring me back to youQ
And build our happy nest againA
