I said of laughter it is vainA
Of mirth I said what profits itB
Therefore I found a book and writB
Therein how ease and also painA
How health and sickness every oneC
Is vanity beneath the sunC
-
Man walks in a vain shadow heD
Disquieteth himself in vainA
The things that were shall be againE
The rivers do not fill the seaD
But turn back to their secret sourceF
The winds too turn upon their courseF
-
Our treasures moth and rust corruptG
Or thieves break through and steal or theyH
Make themselves wings and fly awayH
One man made merry as he suppedG
Nor guessed how when that night grew dimI
His soul would be required of himI
-
We build our houses on the sandG
Comely withoutside and withinJ
But when the winds and rains beginJ
To beat on them they cannot standG
They perish quickly overthrownK
Loose from the very basement stoneK
-
All things are vanity I saidG
Yea vanity of vanitiesL
The rich man dies and the poor diesM
The worm feeds sweetly on the deadG
Whate'er thou lackest keep this trustG
All in the end shall have but dustG
-
The one inheritance which bestG
And worst alike shall find and shareN
The wicked cease from troubling thereN
And there the weary be at restG
There all the wisdom of the wiseM
Is vanity of vanitiesL
-
Man flourishes as a green leafO
And as a leaf doth pass awayH
Or as a shade that cannot stayH
And leaves no track his course is briefO
Yet man doth hope and fear and planP
Till he is dead O foolish manP
-
Our eyes cannot be satisfiedG
With seeing nor our ears be filledG
With hearing yet we plant and buildG
And buy and make our borders wideG
We gather wealth we gather careN
But know not who shall be our heirN
-
Why should we hasten to ariseM
So early and so late take restG
Our labor is not good our bestG
Hopes fade our heart is stayed on liesM
Verily we sow wind and weD
Shall reap the whirlwind verilyQ
-
He who hath little shall not lackR
He who hath plenty shall decayH
Our fathers went we pass awayH
Our children follow on our trackR
So generations fail and soS
They are renewed and come and goS
-
The earth is fattened with our deadG
She swallows more and doth not ceaseT
Therefore her wine and oil increaseT
And her sheaves are not numberedG
Therefore her plants are green and allQ
Her pleasant trees lusty and tallQ
-
Therefore the maidens cease to singU
And the young men are very sadG
Therefore the sowing is not gladG
And mournful is the harvestingU
Of high and low of great and smallQ
Vanity is the lot of allQ
-
A King dwelt in JerusalemV
He was the wisest man on earthW
He had all riches from his birthW
And pleasures till he tired of themX
Then having tested all things heD
Witnessed that all are vanityD
