The Poor Ghost Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAAB CCC DDD EEE FFFF GGH IJKK LLLL DDD

'Oh whence do you come my dear friend to meA
With your golden hair all fallen below your kneeA
And your face as white as snowdrops on the leaA
And your voice as hollow as the hollow sea 'B
-
'From the other world I come back to youC
My locks are uncurled with dripping drenching dewC
You know the old whilst I know the newC
But to morrow you shall know this too '-
-
'Oh not to morrow into the dark I prayD
Oh not to morrow too soon to go awayD
Here I feel warm and well content and gayD
Give me another year another day '-
-
'Am I so changed in a day and a nightE
That mine own only love shrinks from me with frightE
Is fain to turn away to left or rightE
And cover up his eyes from the sight '-
-
'Indeed I loved you my chosen friendF
I loved you for life but life has an endF
Through sickness I was ready to tendF
But death mars all which we cannot mendF
-
'Indeed I loved you I love you yetG
If you will stay where your bed is setG
Where I have planted a violetH
Which the wind waves which the dew makes wet '-
-
'Life is gone then love too is goneI
It was a reed that I leant uponJ
Never doubt I will leave you aloneK
And not wake you rattling bone with boneK
-
'I go home alone to my bedL
Dug deep at the foot and deep at the headL
Roofed in with a load of leadL
Warm enough for the forgotten deadL
-
'But why did your tears soak through the clayD
And why did your sobs wake me where I layD
I was away far enough awayD
Let me sleep now till the Judgment Day '-
