'Now did you mark a falconA
Sister dear sister dearB
Flying toward my windowC
In the morning cool and clearB
With jingling bells about her neckD
But what beneath her wingE
It may have been a ribbonA
Or it may have been a ring 'F
'I marked a falcon swoopingE
At the break of dayG
And for your love my sister doveH
I 'frayed the thief away 'F
-
'Or did you spy a ruddy houndI
Sister fair and tallJ
Went snuffing round my garden boundI
Or crouched by my bower wallJ
With a silken leash about his neckD
But in his mouth may beK
A chain of gold and silver linksL
Or a letter writ to me '-
'I heard a hound highborn sisterM
Stood baying at the moonN
I rose and drove him from your wallJ
Lest you should wake too soon '-
-
'Or did you meet a pretty pageO
Sat swinging on the gateP
Sat whistling whistling like a birdQ
Or may be slept too lateP
With eaglets broidered on his capR
And eaglets on his gloveH
If you had turned his pockets outS
You had found some pledge of love '-
'I met him at this daybreakT
Scarce the east was redU
Lest the creaking gate should anger youV
I packed him home to bed '-
-
'Oh patience sister Did you seeK
A young man tall and strongW
Swift footed to uphold the rightX
And to uproot the wrongW
Come home across the desolate seaK
To woo me for his wifeY
And in his heart my heart is lockedZ
And in his life my life '-
'I met a nameless man sisterM
Hard by your chamber doorA2
I said Her husband loves her muchB2
And yet she loves him more '-
-
'Fie sister fie a wicked lieC2
A lie a wicked lieC2
I have none other love but himD2
Nor will have till I dieC2
And you have turned him from our doorA2
And stabbed him with a lieC2
I will go seek him thro' the worldE2
In sorrow till I die '-
'Go seek in sorrow sisterM
And find in sorrow tooV
If thus you shame our father's nameF2
My curse go forth with you '-
