'Oh sad thy lot before I cameA
But sadder when I goB
My presence but a flash of flameA
A transitory glowB
Between two barren wastes like snowB
What wilt thou do when I am goneC
Where wilt thou rest my dearD
For cold thy bed to rest uponE
And cold the falling yearD
Whose withered leaves are lost and sere 'F
-
She hushed the baby at her breastG
She rocked it on her kneeH
'And I will rest my lonely restG
Warmed with the thought of theeH
Rest lulled to rest by memory '-
She hushed the baby with her kissI
She hushed it with her breastG
'Is death so sadder much than thisI
Sure death that builds a nestG
For those who elsewhere cannot rest '-
-
'Oh sad thy note my mateless doveJ
With tender nestling coldK
But hast thou ne'er another loveJ
Left from the days of oldK
To build thy nest of silk and goldK
To warm thy paleness to a blushL
When I am far awayM
To warm thy coldness to a flushL
And turn thee back to MayM
And turn thy twilight back to day '-
-
She did not answer him againN
But leaned her face asideO
Weary with the pang of shame and painP
And sore with wounded prideO
He knew his very soul had liedO
She strained his baby in her armsQ
His baby to her heartR
'Even let it go the love that harmsQ
We twain will never partR
Mine own his own how dear thou art '-
-
'Now never teaze me tender eyedO
Sigh voiced ' he said in scornS
'For nigh at hand there blooms a brideO
My bride before the mornS
Ripe blooming she as thou forlornS
Ripe blooming she my rose my peachT
She woos me day and nightU
I watch her tremble in my reachT
She reddens my delightU
She ripens reddens in my sight '-
-
'And is she like a sunlit roseV
Am I like withered leavesW
Haste where thy spic d garden blowsV
But in bare Autumn evesW
Wilt thou have store of harvest sheavesW
Thou leavest love true love behindX
To seek a love as trueY
Go seek in haste but wilt thou findX
Change new again for newY
Pluck up enjoy yea trample tooY
-
'Alas for her poor faded roseV
Alas for her her like meH
Cast down and trampled in the snows '-
'Like thee nay not like theeH
She leans but from a guarded treeH
Farewell and dream as long agoB
Before we ever metZ
Farewell my swift paced horse seems slow '-
She raised her eyes not wetZ
But hard to Heaven 'Does God forget '-
