Helen Grey Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCCBDEED BFFBGHHG BIIBBJJB

Macmillan's Magazine MarchA
-
-
Because one loves you Helen GreyB
Is that a reason you should poutC
And like a March wind veer aboutC
And frown and say your shrewish sayB
Don't strain the cord until it snapsD
Don't split the sound heart with your wedgeE
Don't cut your fingers with the edgeE
Of your keen wit you may perhapsD
-
Because you're handsome Helen GreyB
Is that a reason to be proudF
Your eyes are bold your laugh is loudF
Your steps go mincing on their wayB
But so you miss that modest charmG
Which is the surest charm of allH
Take heed you yet may trip and fallH
And no man care to stretch his armG
-
Stoop from your cold height Helen GreyB
Come down and take a lowlier placeI
Come down to fill it now with graceI
Come down you must perforce some dayB
For years cannot be kept at bayB
And fading years will make you oldJ
Then in their turn will men seem coldJ
When you yourself are nipped and greyB
