The first was like a dream through summer heatA
The second like a tedious numbing swoonB
While the half frozen pulses lagged to beatA
Beneath a winter moonB
-
'But ' says my friend 'what was this thing and where '-
It was a pleasure place within my soulC
An earthly paradise supremely fairD
That lured me from the goalC
-
The first part was a tissue of hugged liesE
The second was its ruin fraught with painF
Why raise the fair delusion to the skiesE
But to be dashed againG
-
My castle stood of white transparent glassH
Glittering and frail with many a fretted spireI
But when the summer sunset came to passH
It kindled into fireJ
-
My pleasaunce was an undulating greenK
Stately with trees whose shadows slept belowL
With glimpses of smooth garden beds betweenK
Like flame or sky or snowL
-
Swift squirrels on the pastures took their easeM
With leaping lambs safe from the unfeared knifeN
All singing birds rejoicing in those treesM
Fulfilled their careless lifeN
-
Woodpigeons cooed there stockdoves nestled thereD
My trees were full of songs and flowers and fruitO
Their branches spread a city to the airD
And mice lodged in their rootO
-
My heath lay farther off where lizards livedP
In strange metallic mail just spied and goneQ
Like darted lightnings here and there perceivedR
But nowhere dwelt uponS
-
Frogs and fat toads were there to hop or plodT
And propagate in peace an uncouth crewU
Where velvet headed rushes rustling nodT
And spill the morning dewU
-
All caterpillars throve beneath my ruleV
With snails and slugs in corners out of sightW
I never marred the curious sudden stoolV
That perfects in a nightW
-
Safe in his excavated galleryX
The burrowing mole groped on from year to yearY
No harmless hedgehog curled because of meX
His prickly back for fearY
-
Oft times one like an angel walked with meX
With spirit discerning eyes like flames of fireJ
But deep as the unfathomed endless seaX
Fulfilling my desireJ
-
And sometimes like a snowdrift he was fairD
And sometimes like a sunset glorious redZ
And sometimes he had wings to scale the airD
With aureole round his headZ
-
We sang our songs together by the wayA2
Calls and recalls and echoes of delightW
So communed we together all the dayA2
And so in dreams by nightW
-
I have no words to tell what way we walkedB2
What unforgotten path now closed and sealedC2
I have no words to tell all things we talkedB2
All things that he revealedC2
-
This only can I tell that hour by hourJ
I waxed more feastful lifted up and gladD2
I felt no thorn prick when I plucked a flowerJ
Felt not my friend was sadD2
-
'To morrow ' once I said to him with smilesE2
'To night ' he answered gravely and was dumbF2
But pointed out the stones that numbered milesE2
And miles to comeF2
-
'Not so ' I said 'to morrow shall be sweetA
To night is not so sweet as coming days '-
Then first I saw that he had turned his feetA
Had turned from me his faceG2
-
Running and flying miles and miles he wentH2
But once looked back to beckon with his handI2
And cry 'Come home O love from banishmentJ2
Come to the distant land '-
-
That night destroyed me like an avalancheK2
One night turned all my summer back to snowL
Next morning not a bird upon my branchK2
Not a lamb woke belowL
-
No bird no lamb no living breathing thingL2
No squirrel scampered on my breezy lawnQ
No mouse lodged by his hoard all joys took wingL2
And fled before that dawnQ
-
Azure and sun were starved from heaven aboveM2
No dew had fallen but biting frost lay hoarN2
O love I knew that I should meet my loveM2
Should find my love no moreN2
-
'My love no more ' I muttered stunned with painF
I shed no tear I wrung no passionate handI2
Till something whispered 'You shall meet againG
Meet in a distant land '-
-
Then with a cry like famine I aroseO2
I lit my candle searched from room to roomP2
Searched up and down a war of winds that frozeO2
Swept through the blank of gloomP2
-
I searched day after day night after nightW
Scant change there came to me of night or dayA2
'No more ' I wailed 'no more ' and trimmed my lightW
And gnashed but did not prayA2
-
Until my heart broke and my spirit brokeQ2
Upon the frost bound floor I stumbled fellR2
And moaned 'It is enough withhold the strokeQ2
Farewell O love farewell '-
-
Then life swooned from me And I heard the songS2
Of spheres and spirits rejoicing over meX
One cried 'Our sister she hath suffered long '-
One answered 'Make her see '-
-
One cried 'Oh bless d she who no more painF
Who no more disappointment shall receive '-
One answered 'Not so she must live againG
Strengthen thou her to live '-
-
So while I lay entranced a curtain seemedT2
To shrivel with crackling from before my faceG2
Across mine eyes a waxing radiance beamedT2
And showed a certain placeG2
-
I saw a vision of a woman whereD
Night and new morning strive for dominationU2
Incomparably pale and almost fairD
And sad beyond expressionU2
-
Her eyes were like some fire enshrining gemV2
Were stately like the stars and yet were tenderJ
Her figure charmed me like a windy stemV2
Quivering and drooped and slenderJ
-
I stood upon the outer barren groundW2
She stood on inner ground that budded flowersX2
While circling in their never slackening roundW2
Danced by the mystic hoursX2
-
But every flower was lifted on a thornY2
And every thorn shot upright from its sandsZ2
To gall her feet hoarse laughter pealed in scornY2
With cruel clapping handsZ2
-
She bled and wept yet did not shrink her strengthA3
Was strung up until daybreak of delightW
She measured measureless sorrow toward its lengthA3
And breadth and depth and heightW
-
Then marked I how a chain sustained her formB3
A chain of living links not made nor rivenU2
It stretched sheer up through lighting wind and stormB3
And anchored fast in heavenU2
-
One cried 'How long yet founded on the RockC3
She shall do battle suffer and attain '-
One answered 'Faith quakes in the tempest shockC3
Strengthen her soul again '-
-
I saw a cup sent down and come to herJ
Brimfull of loathing and of bitternessD3
She drank with livid lips that seemed to stirJ
The depth not make it lessE3
-
But as she drank I spied a hand distilF3
New wine and virgin honey making itG3
First bitter sweet then sweet indeed untilF3
She tasted only sweetA
-
Her lips and cheeks waxed rosy fresh and youngH3
Drinking she sang 'My soul shall nothing want '-
And drank anew while soft a song was sungH3
A mystical slow chantI3
-
One cried 'The wounds are faithful of a friendJ3
The wilderness shall blossom as a rose '-
One answered 'Rend the veil declare the endJ3
Strengthen her ere she goes '-
-
Then earth and heaven were rolled up like a scrollC
Time and space change and death had passed awayA2
Weight number measure each had reached its wholeC
The day had come that dayA2
-
Multitudes multitudes stood up in blissK3
Made equal to the angels glorious fairD
With harps palms wedding garments kiss of peaceL3
And crowned and haloed hairD
-
They sang a song a new song in the heightW
Harping with harps to Him Who is Strong and TrueU
They drank new wine their eyes saw with new lightW
Lo all things were made newU
-
Tier beyond tier they rose and rose and roseO2
So high that it was dreadful flames with flamesM3
No man could number them no tongue discloseO2
Their secret sacred namesM3
-
As though one pulse stirred all one rush of bloodN3
Fed all one breath swept through them myriad voicedO3
They struck their harps cast down their crowns they stoodP3
And worshipped and rejoicedO3
-
Each face looked one way like a moon new litG3
Each face looked one way towards its Sun of LoveM2
Drank love and bathed in love and mirrored itG3
And knew no end thereofM2
-
Glory touched glory on each bless d headZ
Hands locked dear hands never to sunder moreN2
These were the new begotten from the deadZ
Whom the great birthday boreN2
-
Heart answered heart soul answered soul at restQ3
Double against each other filled sufficedR3
All loving loved of all but loving bestQ3
And best beloved of ChristR3
-
I saw that one who lost her love in painF
Who trod on thorns who drank the loathsome cupS3
The lost in night in day was found againG
The fallen was lifted upS3
-
They stood together in the bless d noonB
They sang together through the length of daysT3
Each loving face bent Sunwards like a moonB
New lit with love and praiseT3
-
Therefore O friend I would not if I mightW
Rebuild my house of lies wherein I joyedW
One time to dwell my soul shall walk in whiteW
Cast down but not destroyedW
-
Therefore in patience I possess my soulC
Yea therefore as a flint I set my faceG2
To pluck down to build up again the wholeC
But in a distant placeG2
-
These thorns are sharp yet I can tread on themV2
This cup is loathsome yet He makes it sweetW
My face is steadfast toward JerusalemF2
My heart remembers itW
-
I lift the hanging hands the feeble kneesM
I precious more than seven times molten goldW
Until the day when from his storehousesU3
God shall bring new and oldW
-
Beauty for ashes oil of joy for griefV3
Garment of praise for spirit of heavinessU3
Although to day I fade as doth a leafV3
I languish and grow lessU3
-
Although to day He prunes my twigs with painF
Yet doth His blood nourish and warm my rootW
To morrow I shall put forth buds againG
And clothe myself with fruitW
-
Although to day I walk in tedious waysU3
To day His staff is turned into a rodW
Yet will I wait for Him the appointed daysU3
And stay upon my GodW
