Athenaeum OctoberA
-
-
Chide not let me breathe a littleB
For I shall not mourn him longC
Though the life cord was so brittleB
The love cord was very strongC
I would wake a little spaceD
Till I find a sleeping placeD
-
You can go I shall not weepE
You can go unto your restF
My heart ache is all too deepE
And too sore my throbbing breastF
Can sobs be or angry tearsG
Where are neither hopes nor fearsH
-
Though with you I am aloneI
And must be so everywhereJ
I will make no useless moanI
None shall say 'She could not bear '-
While life lasts I will be strongC
But I shall not struggle longC
-
Listen listen EverywhereJ
A low voice is calling meK
And a step is on the stairJ
And one comes ye do not seeK
Listen listen EvermoreL
A dim hand knocks at the doorL
-
Hear me he is come againM
My own dearest is come backN
Bring him in from the cold rainO
Bring wine and let nothing lackN
Thou and I will rest togetherA
Love until the sunny weatherA
-
I will shelter thee from harmP
Hide thee from all heavinessK
Come to me and keep thee warmQ
By my side in quietnessK
I will lull thee to thy sleepE
With sweet songs we will not weepE
-
Who hath talked of weeping YetR
There is something at my heartS
Gnawing I would fain forgetR
And an aching and a smartS
Ah my mother 'tis in vainO
For he is not come againM
