I dwell alone I dwell alone aloneA
Whilst full my river flows down to the seaB
Gilded with flashing boatsC
That bring no friend to meB
O love songs gurgling from a hundred throatsC
O love pangs let me beB
-
Fair fall the freighted boats which gold and stoneA
And spices bear to seaB
Slim gleaming maidens swell their mellow notesC
Love promising entreatingD
Ah sweet but fleetingD
Beneath the shivering snow white sailsE
Hush the wind flags and failsE
Hush they will lie becalmed in sight of strandF
Sight of my strand where I do dwell aloneA
Their songs wake singing echoes in my landF
They cannot hear me moanA
-
One latest solitary swallow fliesG
Across the sea rough autumn tempest tossedH
Poor bird shall it be lostH
Dropped down into this uncongenial seaB
With no kind eyesG
To watch it while it diesG
Unguessed uncared for freeB
Set free at lastI
The short pang pastI
In sleep in death in dreamless sleep locked fastI
-
Mine avenue is all a growth of oaksJ
Some rent by thunder strokesJ
Some rustling leaves and acorns in the breezeK
Fair fall my fertile treesK
That rear their goodly heads and live at easeK
-
A spider's web blocks all mine avenueL
He catches down and foolish painted fliesG
That spider wary and wiseG
Each morn it hangs a rainbow strung with dewL
Betwixt boughs green with sapM
So fair few creatures guess it is a trapM
I will not mar the webN
Though sad I am to see the small lives ebbN
-
It shakes my trees shake for a wind is rousedO
In cavern where it housedO
Each white and quivering sailP
Of boats among the water leavesQ
Hollows and strains in the full throated galeP
Each maiden sings againR
Each languid maiden whom the calmS
Had lulled to sleep with rest and spice and balmS
Miles down my river to the seaB
They float and waneT
Long miles away from meB
-
Perhaps they say 'She grievesQ
Uplifted like a beacon on her tower '-
Perhaps they say 'One hourU
More and we dance among the golden sheaves '-
Perhaps they say 'One hourU
More and we standF
Face to face hand in handF
Make haste O slack gale to the looked for land '-
-
My trees are not in flowerU
I have no bowerU
And gusty creaks my towerU
And lonesome very lonesome is my strandF
