Above the city hangs the moonA
Some clouds are boding rainB
Gilbert erewhile on journey goneC
To night comes home againD
Ten years have passed above his headE
Each year has brought him gainB
His prosperous life has smoothly spedE
Without or tear or stainB
-
'Tis somewhat late the city clocksF
Twelve deep vibrations tollG
As Gilbert at the portal knocksF
Which is his journey's goalG
The street is still and desolateH
The moon hid by a cloudI
Gilbert impatient will not waitJ
His second knock peals loudI
-
The clocks are hushed there's not a lightK
In any window nighL
And not a single planet brightK
Looks from the clouded skyL
The air is raw the rain descendsM
A bitter north wind blowsN
His cloak the traveller scarce defendsM
Will not the door uncloseM
-
He knocks the third time and the lastO
His summons now they hearP
Within a footstep hurrying fastO
Is heard approaching nearQ
The bolt is drawn the clanking chainB
Falls to the floor of stoneR
And Gilbert to his heart will strainB
His wife and children soonA
-
The hand that lifts the latchet holdsM
A candle to his sightK
And Gilbert on the step beholdsM
A woman clad in whiteK
Lo water from her dripping dressM
Runs on the streaming floorS
From every dark and clinging tressM
The drops incessant pourS
-
There's none but her to welcome himT
She holds the candle highL
And motionless in form and limbT
Stands cold and silent nighL
There's sand and sea weed on her robeU
Her hollow eyes are blindV
No pulse in such a frame can throbW
No life is there definedV
-
Gilbert turned ashy white but stillX
His lips vouchsafed no cryL
He spurred his strength and master willX
To pass the figure byL
But moving slow it faced him straightJ
It would not flinch nor quailY
Then first did Gilbert's strength abateJ
His stony firmness quailY
-
He sank upon his knees and prayedZ
The shape stood rigid thereA2
He called aloud for human aidZ
No human aid was nearQ
An accent strange did thus repeatB2
Heaven's stern but just decreeC2
The measure thou to her didst meteB2
To thee shall measured beC2
-
Gilbert sprang from his bended kneesM
By the pale spectre pushedD2
And wild as one whom demons seizeM
Up the hall staircase rushedE2
Entered his chamber near the bedE
Sheathed steel and fire arms hungF2
Impelled by maniac purpose dreadE
He chose those stores amongF2
-
Across his throat a keen edged knifeG2
With vigorous hand he drewH2
The wound was wide his outraged lifeG2
Rushed rash and redly throughH2
And thus died by a shameful deathI2
A wise and worldly manJ2
Who never drew but selfish breathI2
Since first his life beganJ2
