A Short Poem or Else Not Say IA
-
True pleasure breathes not city airB
Nor in Art's temples dwellsC
In palaces and towers whereB
The voice of Grandeur dwellsC
-
No Seek it where high Nature holdsD
Her court 'mid stately grovesE
Where she her majesty unfoldsD
And in fresh beauty movesF
-
Where thousand birds of sweetest songG
The wildly rushing stormH
And hundred streams which glide alongG
Her mighty concert formH
-
Go where the woods in beauty sleepI
Bathed in pale Luna's lightJ
Or where among their branches sweepI
The hollow sounds of nightJ
-
Go where the warbling nightingaleK
In gushes rich doth singL
Till all the lonely quiet valeK
With melody doth ringL
-
Go sit upon a mountain steepI
And view the prospect roundM
The hills and vales the valley's sweepI
The far horizon boundM
-
Then view the wide sky overheadN
The still deep vault of blueO
The sun which golden light doth shedN
The clouds of pearly hueO
-
And as you gaze on this vast sceneP
Your thoughts will journey farQ
Though hundred years should roll betweenP
On Time's swift passing carQ
-
To ages when the earth was youndN
When patriarchs grey and oldN
The praises of their god oft sungR
And oft his mercies toldN
-
You see them with their beards of snowS
Their robes of ample formH
Their lives whose peaceful gentle flowS
Felt seldom passion's stormH
-
Then a calm solemn pleasure stealsT
Into your inmost mindN
A quiet aura your spirit feelsT
A softened stillness kindN
