Arranging long locked drawers and shelvesA
Of cabinets shut up for yearsB
What a strange task we've set ourselvesA
How still the lonely room appearsB
How strange this mass of ancient treasuresC
Mementos of past pains and pleasuresC
These volumes clasped with costly stoneD
With print all faded gilding goneE
-
These fans of leaves from Indian treesF
These crimson shells from Indian seasF
These tiny portraits set in ringsG
Once doubtless deemed such precious thingsG
Keepsakes bestowed by Love on FaithH
And worn till the receiver's deathI
Now stored with cameos china shellsJ
In this old closet's dusty cellsJ
-
I scarcely think for ten long yearsB
A hand has touched these relics oldK
And coating each slow formed appearsB
The growth of green and antique mouldK
-
All in this house is mossing overL
All is unused and dim and dampM
Nor light nor warmth the rooms discoverL
Bereft for years of fire and lampM
-
The sun sometimes in summer entersC
The casements with reviving rayN
But the long rains of many wintersC
Moulder the very walls awayN
-
And outside all is ivy clingingO
To chimney lattice gable greyN
Scarcely one little red rose springingO
Through the green moss can force its wayN
-
Unscared the daw and starling nestleP
Where the tall turret rises highQ
And winds alone come near to rustleP
The thick leaves where their cradles lieQ
-
I sometimes think when late at evenR
I climb the stair reluctantlyS
Some shape that should be well in heavenT
Or ill elsewhere will pass by meS
-
I fear to see the very facesU
Familiar thirty years agoV
Even in the old accustomed placesU
Which look so cold and gloomy nowW
-
I've come to close the window hitherL
At twilight when the sun was downX
And Fear my very soul would witherL
Lest something should be dimly shownD
-
Too much the buried form resemblingO
Of her who once was mistress hereY
Lest doubtful shade or moonbeam tremblingO
Might take her aspect once so dearZ
-
Hers was this chamber in her timeA2
It seemed to me a pleasant roomB2
For then no cloud of grief or crimeA2
Had cursed it with a settled gloomB2
-
I had not seen death's image laidC2
In shroud and sheet on yonder bedD2
Before she married she was blestE2
Blest in her youth blest in her worthF2
Her mind was calm its sunny restE2
Shone in her eyes more clear than mirthF2
-
And when attired in rich arrayN
Light lustrous hair about her browW
She yonder sat a kind of dayN
Lit up what seems so gloomy nowW
These grim oak walls even then were grimG2
That old carved chair was then antiqueH2
But what around looked dusk and dimG2
Served as a foil to her fresh cheekH2
Her neck and arms of hue so fairI2
Eyes of unclouded smiling lightJ2
Her soft and curled and floating hairI2
Gems and attire as rainbow brightJ2
-
Reclined in yonder deep recessK2
Ofttimes she would at evening lieQ
Watching the sun she seemed to blessK2
With happy glance the glorious skyQ
She loved such scenes and as she gazedL2
Her face evinced her spirit's moodM2
Beauty or grandeur ever raisedL2
In her a deep felt gratitudeM2
But of all lovely things she lovedN2
A cloudless moon on summer nightJ2
Full oft have I impatience provedO2
To see how long her still delightJ2
Would find a theme in reverieS
Out on the lawn or where the treesF
Let in the lustre fitfullyS
As their boughs parted momentlyS
To the soft languid summer breezeF
Alas that she should e'er have flungP2
Those pure though lonely joys awayN
Deceived by false and guileful tongueP2
She gave her hand then suffered wrongQ2
Oppressed ill used she faded youngP2
And died of grief by slow decayN
-
Open that casket look how brightJ2
Those jewels flash upon the sightJ2
The brilliants have not lost a rayN
Of lustre since her wedding dayN
But see upon that pearly chainR2
How dim lies Time's discolouring stainR2
I've seen that by her daughter wornS2
For ere she died a child was bornS2
A child that ne'er its mother knewT2
That lone and almost friendless grewT2
For ever when its step drew nighQ
Averted was the father's eyeQ
And then a life impure and wildU2
Made him a stranger to his childU2
Absorbed in vice he little caredV2
On what she did or how she faredV2
The love withheld she never soughtW2
She grew uncherished learnt untaughtW2
To her the inward life of thoughtW2
Full soon was open laidW2
I know not if her friendlessnessF
Did sometimes on her spirit pressF
But plaint she never madeW2
The book shelves were her darling treasureL
She rarely seemed the time to measureL
While she could read aloneD
And she too loved the twilight woodW2
And often in her mother's moodW2
Away to yonder hill would hieX2
Like her to watch the setting sunT
Or see the stars born one by oneT
Out of the darkening skyQ
Nor would she leave that hill till nightW2
Trembled from pole to pole with lightW2
Even then upon her homeward wayN
Long long her wandering steps delayedW2
To quit the sombre forest shadeW2
Through which her eerie pathway layN
You ask if she had beauty's graceF
I know not but a nobler faceF
My eyes have seldom seenY2
A keen and fine intelligenceF
And better still the truest senseF
Were in her speaking mienY2
But bloom or lustre was there noneT
Only at moments fitful shoneD
An ardour in her eyeQ
That kindled on her cheek a flushZ2
Warm as a red sky's passing blushZ2
And quick with energyS
Her speech too was not common speechA3
No wish to shine or aim to teachA3
Was in her words displayedW2
She still began with quiet senseF
But oft the force of eloquenceF
Came to her lips in aidW2
Language and voice unconscious changedW2
And thoughts in other words arrangedW2
Her fervid soul transfusedW2
Into the hearts of those who heardW2
And transient strength and ardour stirredW2
In minds to strength unusedW2
Yet in gay crowd or festal glareI2
Grave and retiring was her airI2
'Twas seldom save with me aloneD
That fire of feeling freely shoneD
She loved not awe's nor wonder's gazeF
Nor even exaggerated praiseF
Nor even notice if too keenY2
The curious gazer searched her mienY2
Nature's own green expanse revealedW2
The world the pleasures she could prizeF
On free hill side in sunny fieldW2
In quiet spots by woods concealedW2
Grew wild and fresh her chosen joysF
Yet Nature's feelings deeply layN
In that endowed and youthful frameB3
Shrined in her heart and hid from dayN
They burned unseen with silent flameB3
In youth's first search for mental lightW2
She lived but to reflect and learnC3
But soon her mind's maturer mightW2
For stronger task did pant and yearnC3
And stronger task did fate assignD3
Task that a giant's strength might strainR2
To suffer long and ne'er repineR2
Be calm in frenzy smile at painR2
-
Pale with the secret war of feelingO
Sustained with courage mute yet highQ
The wounds at which she bled revealingO
Only by altered cheek and eyeQ
-
She bore in silence but when passionR2
Surged in her soul with ceaseless foamE3
The storm at last brought desolationR2
And drove her exiled from her homeE3
-
And silent still she straight assembledW2
The wrecks of strength her soul retainedW2
For though the wasted body trembledW2
The unconquered mind to quail disdainedW2
-
She crossed the sea now lone she wandersF
By Seine's or Rhine's or Arno's flowS
Fain would I know if distance rendersF
Relief or comfort to her woeS
-
Fain would I know if henceforth everL
These eyes shall read in hers againR2
That light of love which faded neverL
Though dimmed so long with secret painR2
-
She will return but cold and alteredW2
Like all whose hopes too soon departW2
Like all on whom have beat unshelteredW2
The bitter blasts that blight the heartW2
-
No more shall I behold her lyingO
Calm on a pillow smoothed by meS
No more that spirit worn with sighingO
Will know the rest of infancyS
-
If still the paths of lore she followS
'Twill be with tired and goaded willS
She'll only toil the aching hollowS
The joyless blank of life to fillS
-
And oh full oft quite spent and wearyS
Her hand will pause her head declineR2
That labour seems so hard and drearyS
On which no ray of hope may shineR2
-
Thus the pale blight of time and sorrowS
Will shade with grey her soft dark hairI2
Then comes the day that knows no morrowS
And death succeeds to long despairI2
-
So speaks experience sage and hoaryS
I see it plainly know it wellS
Like one who having read a storyS
Each incident therein can tellS
-
Touch not that ring 'twas his the sireL
Of that forsaken childW2
And nought his relics can inspireF3
Save memories sin defiledW2
-
I who sat by his wife's death bedW2
I who his daughter lovedW2
Could almost curse the guilty deadW2
For woes the guiltless provedW2
-
And heaven did curse they found him laidW2
When crime for wrath was rifeG3
Cold with the suicidal bladeW2
Clutched in his desperate gripeH3
-
'Twas near that long deserted hutW2
Which in the wood decaysF
Death's axe self wielded struck his rootW2
And lopped his desperate daysF
-
You know the spot where three black treesF
Lift up their branches fellS
And moaning ceaseless as the seasF
Still seem in every passing breezeF
The deed of blood to tellS
-
They named him mad and laid his bonesF
Where holier ashes lieQ
Yet doubt not that his spirit groansF
In hell's eternityW2
-
But lo night closing o'er the earthF2
Infects our thoughts with gloomB2
Come let us strive to rally mirthF2
Where glows a clear and tranquil hearthI3
In some more cheerful roomB2
