Hymn Xvi: Happy The Souls That First Believed Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CDEE AAFF EGAA H IJ KKLM NNDD MLAA OOIJ

Happy the souls that first believedA
To Jesus and each other cleavedA
Joined by the unction from aboveB
In mystic fellowship of loveB
-
Meek simple followers of the LambC
They lived and spake and thought the sameD
They joyfully conspired to raiseE
Their ceaseless sacrifice of praiseE
-
With grace abundantly enduedA
A pure believing multitudeA
They all were of one heart and soulF
And only love inspired the wholeF
-
O what an age of golden daysE
O what a choice peculiar raceG
Washed in the Lamb's all cleansing bloodA
Anointed kings and priests to GodA
-
Ye different sects who all declareH
'Lo here is Christ ' or 'Christ is here '-
Your stronger proofs divinely giveI
And show me where the Christians liveJ
-
The gates of hell cannot prevailK
The church on earth can never failK
Ah join me to thy secret onesL
Ah gather all thy living stonesM
-
Scattered o'er all the earth they lieN
Till thou collect them with thine eyeN
Draw by the music of thy nameD
And charm into a beauteous frameD
-
For this the pleading Spirit groansM
And cries in all thy banished onesL
Greatest of gifts thy love impartA
And make us of one mind and heartA
-
Join every soul that looks to theeO
In bonds of perfect charityO
Now Lord the glorious fullness giveI
And all in all for ever liveJ
