To all you ladies now at landA
We men at sea inditeB
But first would have you understandA
How hard it is to writeB
The Muses now and Neptune tooC
We must implore to write to youC
With a fa la la la laD
-
For though the Muses should prove kindE
And fill our empty brainF
Yet if rough Neptune rouse the windE
To wave the azure mainF
Our paper pen and ink and weG
Roll up and down our ships at seaG
With a fa la la la laD
-
Then if we write not by each postH
Think not we are unkindE
Nor yet conclude our ships are lostI
By Dutchmen or by windE
Our tears we'll send a speedier wayJ
The tide shall bring them twice a dayJ
With a fa la la la laD
-
The King with wonder and surpriseK
Will swear the seas grow boldL
Because the tides will higher riseK
Than e'er they did of oldL
But let him know it is our tearsM
Bring floods of grief to Whitehall stairsM
With a fa la la la laD
-
Should foggy Opdam chance to knowN
Our sad and dismal storyG
The Dutch would scorn so weak a foeN
And quit their fort at GoreeG
For what resistance can they findE
From men who've left their hearts behindE
With a fa la la la laD
-
Let wind and weather do its worstO
Be you to us but kindE
Let Dutchmen vapour Spaniards curseP
No sorrow we shall findE
'Tis then no matter how things goN
Or who 's our friend or who 's our foeN
With a fa la la la laD
-
To pass our tedious hours awayJ
We throw a merry mainF
Or else at serious ombre playJ
But why should we in vainF
Each other's ruin thus pursueC
We were undone when we left youC
With a fa la la la laD
-
But now our fears tempestuous growN
And cast our hopes awayJ
Whilst you regardless of our woeN
Sit careless at a playJ
Perhaps permit some happier manQ
To kiss your hand or flirt your fanQ
With a fa la la la laD
-
When any mournful tune you hearR
That dies in every noteS
As if it sigh'd with each man's careT
For being so remoteS
Think then how often love we've madeU
To you when all those tunes were play'dU
With a fa la la la laD
-
In justice you cannot refuseV
To think of our distressW
When we for hopes of honour loseV
Our certain happinessX
All those designs are but to proveY
Ourselves more worthy of your loveZ
With a fa la la la laD
-
And now we've told you all our lovesA2
And likewise all our fearsB2
In hopes this declaration movesC2
Some pity for our tearsM
Let 's hear of no inconstancyG
We have too much of that at seaG
With a fa la la la laD
