A wretched beggar boy deride | A |
'Do you not know ' said I 'how mean | B |
It is to be thus begging seen | B |
If for a week I were not fed | C |
I'm sure I would not beg my bread ' | D |
And then away she saw me stalk | E |
With a most self important walk | E |
But meeting her upon the stairs | F |
All these my consequential airs | F |
Were changed to an entreating look | G |
'Give me ' said I 'the pocket book | G |
Mamma you promised I should have ' | D |
The pocket book to me she gave | H |
After reproof and counsel sage | I |
She bade me write in the first page | I |
This naughty action all in rhyme | J |
No food to have until the time | J |
In writing fair and neatly worded | K |
The unfeeling fact I had recorded | L |
Slow I compose and slow I write | M |
And now I feel keen hunger bite | M |
My mother's pardon I entreat | M |
And beg she'll give me food to eat | M |
Dry bread would be received with joy | N |
By her repentant beggar boy | N |
