The Reproof Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEEFFGGDHIIJJKL MMMMNN

Mamma heard me with scorn and prideA
A wretched beggar boy derideA
'Do you not know ' said I 'how meanB
It is to be thus begging seenB
If for a week I were not fedC
I'm sure I would not beg my bread 'D
And then away she saw me stalkE
With a most self important walkE
But meeting her upon the stairsF
All these my consequential airsF
Were changed to an entreating lookG
'Give me ' said I 'the pocket bookG
Mamma you promised I should have 'D
The pocket book to me she gaveH
After reproof and counsel sageI
She bade me write in the first pageI
This naughty action all in rhymeJ
No food to have until the timeJ
In writing fair and neatly wordedK
The unfeeling fact I had recordedL
Slow I compose and slow I writeM
And now I feel keen hunger biteM
My mother's pardon I entreatM
And beg she'll give me food to eatM
Dry bread would be received with joyN
By her repentant beggar boyN
