To C. 33 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBC DEDE FGFG HIHI

Oscar WildeA
-
-
I gazed upon thee desolate and heardB
Thine anguished cry when fell the iron ginC
That all but broke thy soul yet gave thy wordB
The strength to ask forgiveness of thy sinC
-
I saw thee fleeing from the cruel lightD
Of thine own fame I saw thee hide thy faceE
In alien dust to cover up the blightD
Upon thy brow that time may yet eraseE
-
I knew thy creed although thy lips were muteF
I knew the gods thou didst not dare to ownG
I knew the Upas poison at the rootF
Of thy last flower of song in prison blownG
-
And out of all thy woe there came to meH
This miracle of dogma like a cryI
No law but freedom for the vagrant beeH
No love but summer for the butterflyI
