-
-
Hail sceptered Mars great god of warsB
Hail Carnage queen of bloodC
And hail those muffled armamentsD
Thy fettered vulture broodE
Their sable wings are laureled andF
Their necks are ribboned gayG
And silken folds their talons hideH
This kingly holidayG
-
Grotesque and grim in chains of goldI
They go with solemn mienJ
Their horrid plumes bedizened forK
The eyes of king and queenJ
But padded claw and mummer's crestL
Have served not to disguiseM
Those iron beaks that thirst for bloodC
Those wakeful wolfish eyesM
-
Ten condors with unsated mawsM
Four lesser birds of preyG
An eagle with undaunted eyeN
From Shasta far awayG
A score of birds from many seasM
All purged of grime and bloodC
Keep truckling pace the fete to graceM
Mars' fettered vulture broodE
-
But see ye not great god of warsM
And ye Britannia's kingO
The day when these black birds shall flyN
On fierce unshackled wingO
When they shall meet 'twixt sea and skyN
Rend flesh and break the boneP
And blood shall trickle through the wavesM
To gray old Triton's throneP
-
Hail sceptered Mars great god of warsM
Hail Carnage queen of bloodC
And hail those muffled armamentsM
Thy fettered vulture broodE
And yet Christ's gentle teaching scrollsM
Prophetic on the skyN
Behold some day thy vulture broodE
Shall go unfed and dieN
