Mouths have they but they speak not | B |
Yet something in the certainty of faith | C |
To their disciples saith | C |
Believe on me and vengeance I will wreak not | B |
The word that conquers death | C |
The immutable and boundless gift of grace | D |
Dwells in that stony face | D |
And every supplication answereth | C |
Mouths have they but they speak not | B |
Yet one supernal will that shapes to suit | E |
A great decree that can not be belied | F |
Utters from voiceless lips those creeds that guide | F |
The tribes that never heard | G |
The living saving Word | G |
That have their dead gods and are satisfied | F |

Eyes have they but they see not | B |
Yet the pagan builds his shrine | H |
And keeps his fires divine | H |
Forever bright nor darkly doubts there be not | B |
Enough of grace and power | I |
Within those eyes that glower | I |
To read his soul To him they are not blind | J |
For some dim undefined | J |
Reward of faith that thrills his untaught breast | K |
Links up his baser mind | J |
To the clear eyes of God that burn behind | J |
The stony brow It is a creed professed | K |
Before a deity not quenched in space | D |
But one to whom his bands | L |
Can lift adoring hands | L |
And see and touch and worship face to face | D |

Ears have they but they hear not | B |
Yet the heathen kneel and pray | M |
Nor in their madness say | M |
Thou art no god and therefore I will fear not | B |
What if I disobey | M |
Thou art but stone or clay | M |
They hear not but their worshippers impute | E |
Them faculties to suit | E |
The divination of the prayers they say | M |
And Christ who understands | L |
His children in all lands | L |
When from the dark their dying souls have cried | F |
Shrines His great heart of love within the clod | F |
The savage calls his god | F |
And all idolatry is deified | F |
