Mouths have they but they speak notB
Yet something in the certainty of faithC
To their disciples saithC
Believe on me and vengeance I will wreak notB
The word that conquers deathC
The immutable and boundless gift of graceD
Dwells in that stony faceD
And every supplication answerethC
Mouths have they but they speak notB
Yet one supernal will that shapes to suitE
A great decree that can not be beliedF
Utters from voiceless lips those creeds that guideF
The tribes that never heardG
The living saving WordG
That have their dead gods and are satisfiedF

Eyes have they but they see notB
Yet the pagan builds his shrineH
And keeps his fires divineH
Forever bright nor darkly doubts there be notB
Enough of grace and powerI
Within those eyes that glowerI
To read his soul To him they are not blindJ
For some dim undefinedJ
Reward of faith that thrills his untaught breastK
Links up his baser mindJ
To the clear eyes of God that burn behindJ
The stony brow It is a creed professedK
Before a deity not quenched in spaceD
But one to whom his bandsL
Can lift adoring handsL
And see and touch and worship face to faceD

-
Ears have they but they hear notB
Yet the heathen kneel and prayM
Nor in their madness sayM
Thou art no god and therefore I will fear notB
What if I disobeyM
Thou art but stone or clayM
They hear not but their worshippers imputeE
Them faculties to suitE
The divination of the prayers they sayM
And Christ who understandsL
His children in all landsL
When from the dark their dying souls have criedF
Shrines His great heart of love within the clodF
The savage calls his godF
And all idolatry is deifiedF
