Once in a dream of BabylonA
I sat with Lilith and CainB
At the world old drama From God to GodC
In the House of Things ProfaneB
Trumpets and lights and the playersD
Swung to the stage and thenE
I saw as I looked in their facesF
A woman and some menE
-
Men with the eyes of the psalmistC
Men with the hearts of SaulG
Strong with the wine of valorH
But faint with the woman's thrallG
Calm were her eyes as she held themI
Charmed to her soulless swayJ
For she had the face of the MagdaleneK
And the heart of AholibaL
-
Wine and kisses and gusty wordsM
Kisses and wine againE
And her lips and brow were red with stainsN
From the hairy mouths of menE
Red as the stain on the brow of CainB
That burned with his Maker's hateC
Or the lips of the witch that Adam lovedC
Ere God revealed his mateC
-
Trumpets and lights and the playersD
Swung from the stage and thenE
The curtain fell on the dramaO
Of a woman and some menE
While cleaving the dome of the templeP
Fell the Avenger's rodC
And lo when I looked again I sawQ
We were face to face with GodC
-
And Lilith the witch dropped down and prayedC
That her child a soul might haveR
And the blood red stain on the brow of CainB
Be wiped out in the graveS
And this was my dream of BabylonA
When I sat with Lilith and CainB
At the world old drama From God to GodC
In the House of Things ProfaneB
