The Christmas homes of EnglandA
How far famed and how dearB
In bright array they ever standC
That glad day of the yearB
When gathered round the hearth stoneD
The loved ones joyful meetE
With one accord from far and nearB
The circle glad to greetE
-
The Christmas homes of EnglandA
O many a joyous browF
Which ever yet hath hailed that dayG
Will sorrowfully bowF
When this one now returnethH
For they look but look in vainI
The pride and joy of that glad homeJ
They ne'er shall see againK
-
The Christmas homes of EnglandA
In manhood's noblest bloomL
On Alma's bloody fields thy lordsM
Have found their lowly tombL
The warrior grey whose stalwart armN
Had prostrate laid the foeO
And gallant sons of noble siresP
By them in death lie lowO
-
The Christmas homes of EnglandA
Alike in peasant's cotQ
Where hath the death wail not been heardR
Where hath it entered notQ
And the widowed mother silent weepsS
And sheds the bitter tearT
As fancy sees her gallant boyU
The cold ground for his bierV
-
The Christmas homes of EnglandA
In that far off Eastern landC
What thoughts will be awakenedA
Among that gallant bandC
How from scenes so dark and fearfulW
Their spirit will take flightX
To the bright home of their childhoodY
And the happy Christmas nightX
-
The Christmas homes of EnglandA
The love of many yearsZ
Is turned into a ceaseless fountA
Of bitterness and tearsA2
The mother and the widowA
The maiden and the childA
They call but none shall answerB2
Those loving accents mildA
-
O Christmas homes of EnglandA
There's One the widow's GodA
Who while He chastens pitiethH
The sad ones 'neath His rodA
His arm beneath supportedA
Thy loved ones in the fieldA
And whispered Leave thy little onesC2
To me their God their shieldA
-
O Christmas homes of EnglandA
Let all unite in prayerT
That He the widow's God may takeD2
Such to His special careT
And we to whom he sparethH
Our hearts best treasure yetA
The widow and the orphanE2
O let us not forgetA
