Threes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCA ADEFA AGFHI FAJK

I was a boy when I heard three red wordsA
a thousand Frenchmen died in the streetsB
for Liberty Equality Fraternity I askedC
why men die for wordsA
-
I was older men with mustaches sideburnsA
lilacs told me the high golden words areD
Mother Home and Heaven other older men withE
face decorations said God Duty ImmortalityF
they sang these threes slow from deep lungsA
-
Years ticked off their say so on the great clocksA
of doom and damnation soup and nuts meteors flashedG
their say so and out of great Russia came threeF
dusky syllables workmen took guns and went out to dieH
for Bread Peace LandI
-
And I met a marine of the U S A a leatherneck with a girl on his kneeF
for a memory in ports circling the earth and he said Tell me how to sayA
three things and I always get by gimme a plate of ham and eggs howJ
much and do you love me kidK
