He was a mystery in smoke and flagsB
Saying yes to the smoke yes to the flagsB
Yes to the paradoxes of democracyC
Yes to the hopes of governmentD
Of the people by the people for the peopleE
No to debauchery of the public mindF
No to personal malice nursed and fedG
Yes to the Constitution when a helpH
No to the Constitution when a hindranceI
Yes to man as a struggler amid illusionsJ
Each man fated to answer for himselfK
Which of the faiths and illusions of mankindF
Must I choose for my own sustaining lightL
To bring me beyond the present wildernessM

I shall do nothing through malice whatN
