Mamie Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGCHAIAJKLMNOAP QR STUV

Mamie beat her head against the bars of a little IndianaA
town and dreamed of romance and big things offB
somewhere the way the railroad trains all ranC
She could see the smoke of the engines get lost downD
where the streaks of steel flashed in the sun andE
when the newspapers came in on the morning mailF
she knew there was a big Chicago far off where allG
the trains ranC
She got tired of the barber shop boys and the post officeH
chatter and the church gossip and the old pieces theA
band played on the Fourth of July and Decoration DayI
And sobbed at her fate and beat her head against theA
bars and was going to kill herselfJ
When the thought came to her that if she was going toK
die she might as well die struggling for a clutch ofL
romance among the streets of ChicagoM
She has a job now at six dollars a week in the basementN
of the Boston StoreO
And even now she beats her head against the bars in theA
same old way and wonders if there is a bigger placeP
the railroads run to from Chicago where maybeQ
there isR
-
romanceS
and big thingsT
and real dreamsU
that never go smashV
