In A Breath Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BACD EFGHGI JKLLMINL OPQ

To the Williamson BrothersA
-
High noon White sun flashes on the Michigan AvenueB
asphalt Drum of hoofs and whirr of motorsA
Women trapsing along in flimsy clothes catchingC
play of sun fire to their skin and eyesD
-
Inside the playhouse are movies from under the seaE
From the heat of pavements and the dust of sidewalksF
passers by go in a breath to be witnesses ofG
large cool sponges large cool fishes large cool valleysH
and ridges of coral spread silent in the soak ofG
the ocean floor thousands of yearsI
-
A naked swimmer dives A knife in his right handJ
shoots a streak at the throat of a shark The tailK
of the shark lashes One swing would kill the swimmerL
Soon the knife goes into the soft underL
neck of the veering fish Its mouthful of teethM
each tooth a dagger itself set row on row glistensI
when the shuddering yawning cadaver is hauled upN
by the brothers of the swimmerL
-
Outside in the street is the murmur and singing of lifeO
in the sun horses motors women trapsing alongP
in flimsy clothes play of sun fire in their bloodQ
