Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEAFGHIJKLMNOPPP

Hope is a tattered flag and a dream of timeA
Hope is a heartspun word the rainbow the shadblow in whiteB
The evening star inviolable over the coal minesC
The shimmer of northern lights across a bitter winter nightB
The blue hills beyond the smoke of the steel worksD
The birds who go on singing to their mates in peace war peaceE
The ten cent crocus bulb blooming in a used car salesroomA
The horseshoe over the door the luckpiece in the pocketF
The kiss and the comforting laugh and resolveG
Hope is an echo hope ties itself yonder yonderH
The spring grass showing itself where least expectedI
The rolling fluff of white clouds on a changeable skyJ
The broadcast of strings from Japan bells from MoscowK
Of the voice of the prime minister of Sweden carriedL
Across the sea in behalf of a world family of nationsM
And children singing chorals of the Christ childN
And Bach being broadcast from Bethlehem PennsylvaniaO
And tall skyscrapers practically empty of tenantsP
And the hands of strong men groping for handholdsP
And the Salvation Army singing God loves usP
