'The past is a bucket of ashes 'A
-
-
-
THE WOMAN named To morrowB
sits with a hairpin in her teethC
and takes her timeD
and does her hair the way she wants itE
and fastens at last the last braid and coilF
and puts the hairpin where it belongsG
and turns and drawls Well what of itE
My grandmother Yesterday is goneH
What of it Let the dead be deadI
-
-
-
The doors were cedarJ
and the panels strips of goldK
and the girls were golden girlsL
and the panels read and the girls chantedM
We are the greatest cityN
the greatest nationO
nothing like us ever wasP
-
The doors are twisted on broken hingesQ
Sheets of rain swish through on the windR
where the golden girls ran and the panels readI
We are the greatest cityN
the greatest nationO
nothing like us ever wasP
-
-
-
It has happened beforeS
Strong men put up a city and gotT
a nation togetherJ
And paid singers to sing and womenO
to warble We are the greatest cityN
the greatest nationO
nothing like us ever wasP
-
And while the singers sangU
and the strong men listenedV
and paid the singers wellW
and felt good about it allX
there were rats and lizards who listenedV
and the only listeners left nowY
are the rats and the lizardsZ
-
And there are black crowsA2
crying 'Caw caw '-
bringing mud and sticksB2
building a nestC2
over the words carvedD2
on the doors where the panels were cedarJ
and the strips on the panels were goldK
and the golden girls came singingE2
We are the greatest cityN
the greatest nationO
nothing like us ever wasP
-
The only singers now are crows crying 'Caw caw '-
And the sheets of rain whine in the wind and doorwaysF2
And the only listeners now are the rats and the lizardsZ
-
-
-
The feet of the ratsG2
scribble on the door sillsH2
the hieroglyphs of the rat footprintsI2
chatter the pedigrees of the ratsG2
and babble of the bloodJ2
and gabble of the breedK2
of the grandfathers and the great grandfathersL2
of the ratsG2
-
And the wind shiftsM2
and the dust on a door sill shiftsM2
and even the writing of the rat footprintsI2
tells us nothing nothing at allX
about the greatest city the greatest nationO
where the strong men listenedV
and the women warbled Nothing like us ever wasP
