faces of women and children I have seen the marksM
of wanton hungerC
And having answered so I turn once more to those whoJ
sneer at this my city and I give them back the sneerN
and say to themO
Come and show me another city with lifted head singingD
so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunningD
Flinging magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job onP
job here is a tall bold slugger set vivid against theL
little soft citiesQ

as a savage pitted against the wildernessR

Building breaking rebuildingD
Under the smoke dust all over his mouth laughing withS

Bragging and laughing that under his wrist is the pulseY
and under his ribs the heart of the peopleX
