I was just would have just been ifA
was without youB
-
You were a lonely butterfly gliding amongC
the empty meadowD
We first met as kids in churchE
the corridor at the end of the stairs was ourF
quiet corner from where we would look down at the busy road and argue which carG
was oursH
-
You would try to thrutch your head throughB
the window protectorF
and as always I would want to show youB
how better at thrutching I was than youB
then my head would stick to it and you would as always laugh at how big my head wasI
-
Slowly like nestlings we became a flock of our ownJ
I remember how we would bang at theK
uncouth old man's doorL
and run away like scared rats when he opens the doorL
I remember being the victim of his hard whoopsM
-
Every Saturday evening I would walk you down to your castleN
and we would talk about all your luxuriousO
activities during the weekP
and the half glass of water I had to drinkQ
during the weekP
You used to say that you felt the most comfortable with the way I made youB
laughR
Soon we had to watch those eveningsS
walk passed us like calm breezeT
-
February was a Saturday I wouldU
never let to slip out of my memoriesT
I told you goodbyeV
but you turned bright pink as you asked meW
won't you kiss meW
My lips didn't wait to tell you yes with the next actionX
at that moment there was no cage standingY
next to my shouldersH
no weight gravity lost memory of meW
in my mind I was floating in the quietnessO
of space nothing can separate us nowZ
-
But then days walked out of the doorL
and days came in and we had to walk awayA2
from each otherF
big birds now we no longer need the otherF
to fly we thoughtB2
-
You told me I would come back to youB
And I waited like a watchman waiting forL
sunriseC2
You called me weeks later to tell me youB
are now in collegeD2
Congratulations' escaped out of my sad heartE2
in my heart I began to wonderF
how Saturday evenings would be nowZ
who would hold my hand while crossing theK
busy roadF2
who would love me like you didG2
-
I was an empty boat at the middle of a wideH2
oceanX
like a flower in a once garden now turned desert I begged for waterF
-
Then you came back to me but not aloneJ
you came back with a boyI2
and I smiled like I meant it like I was happyW
but I wasn'tJ2
-
Now we are big birds you are the flock birdK2
with a stronger bird by your sideH2
I am the lone eagle who decides to write this poem for youB
Now the uncouth old man doesn't have toB
worry about getting my ass whoopedL2
he can go to sleep nowZ
The window protectors are missing our heads they ask me of you and I tell themM2
you're on your wayA2
-
These scars you see on my skin are not from crawling my way out of the thorns ofN2
loneliness even if I amO2
these scars you see on my skin they are from me flying without youB
