Who comes The sentry's warning cryA
Rings sharply on the evening airB
Who comes The challenge no replyA
Yet something motions thereB
-
A woman by those graceful foldsC
A soldier by that martial treadD
Advance three paces Halt untilE
Thy name and rank be saidD
-
My name Her name in ancient songF
Who fearless from Olympus cameG
Look on me Mortals know me bestH
In battle and in flameG
-
Enough I know that clarion voiceI
I know that gleaming eye and helmJ
Those crimson lips and in their dewK
The best blood of the realmJ
-
The young the brave the good and wiseL
Have fallen in thy curst embraceM
The juices of the grapes of wrathN
Still stain thy guilty faceM
-
My brother lies in yonder fieldO
Face downward to the quiet grassP
Go back he cannot see thee nowQ
But here thou shalt not passP
-
A crack upon the evening airB
A wakened echo from the hillE
The watchdog on the distant shoreR
Gives mouth and all is stillE
-
The sentry with his brother liesL
Face downward on the quiet grassP
And by him in the pale moonshineS
A shadow seems to passP
-
No lance or warlike shield it bearsT
A helmet in its pitying handsU
Brings water from the nearest brookV
To meet his last demandsU
-
Can this be she of haughty mienW
The goddess of the sword and shieldO
Ah yes The Grecian poet's mythX
Sways still each battlefieldO
-
For not alone that rugged WarR
Some grace or charm from Beauty gainsY
But when the goddess' work is doneZ
The woman's still remainsY
