Why as to that said the engineerA
Ghosts ain't things we are apt to fearA
Spirits don't fool with levers muchB
And throttle valves don't take to suchB
And as for JimC
What happened to himC
Was one half fact and t'other half whimC
-
Running one night on the line he sawD
A house as plain as the moral lawD
Just by the moonlit bank and thenceE
Came a drunken man with no more senseE
Than to drop on the railF
Flat as a flailF
As Jim drove by with the midnight mailF
-
Down went the patents steam reversedG
Too late for there came a thud Jim cursedG
As the fireman there in the cab with himC
Kinder stared in the face of JimC
And says What nowH
Says Jim What nowH
I've just run over a man that's howH
-
The fireman stared at Jim They ranI
Back but they never found house nor manI
Nary a shadow within a mileJ
Jim turned pale but he tried to smileJ
Then on he toreK
Ten mile or moreK
In quicker time than he'd made aforeK
-
Would you believe it the very next nightL
Up rose that house in the moonlight whiteL
Out comes the chap and drops as beforeK
Down goes the brake and the rest encoreK
And so in factM
Each night that actM
Occurred till folks swore Jim was crackedM
-
Humph let me see it's a year now 'mostM
That I met Jim East and says How's your ghostM
Gone says Jim and more it's plainN
That ghost don't trouble me againO
I thought I shookP
That ghost when I tookP
A place on an Eastern line but lookP
-
What should I meet the first trip outM
But the very house we talked aboutM
And the selfsame man 'Well ' says I 'I guessQ
It's time to stop this 'yer foolishness '-
So I crammed on steamR
When there came a screamR
From my fireman that jest broke my dreamR
-
'You've killed somebody ' Says I 'Not muchB
I've been thar often and thar ain't no suchB
And now I'll prove it ' Back we ranI
And darn my skin but thar was a manI
On the rail deadM
Smashed in the headM
Now I call that meanness That's all Jim saidM
