I was with Grant the stranger saidA
Said the farmer Say no moreB
But rest thee here at my cottage porchC
For thy feet are weary and soreB
-
I was with Grant the stranger saidA
Said the farmer Nay no moreB
I prithee sit at my frugal boardD
And eat of my humble storeB
-
How fares my boy my soldier boyE
Of the old Ninth Army CorpsB
I warrant he bore him gallantlyF
In the smoke and the battle's roarB
-
I know him not said the aged manG
And as I remarked beforeB
I was with Grant Nay nay I knowH
Said the farmer say no moreB
-
He fell in battle I see alasI
Thou'dst smooth these tidings o'erJ
Nay speak the truth whatever it beF
Though it rend my bosom's coreB
-
How fell he With his face to the foeH
Upholding the flag he boreB
Oh say not that my boy disgracedK
The uniform that he woreB
-
I cannot tell said the aged manG
And should have remarked beforeB
That I was with Grant in IllinoisE
Some three years before the warB
-
Then the farmer spake him never a wordL
But beat with his fist full soreB
That aged man who had worked for GrantM
Some three years before the warB
