Serene indifferent of FateA
Thou sittest at the Western GateA
-
Upon thy height so lately wonB
Still slant the banners of the sunB
-
Thou seest the white seas strike their tentsC
O Warder of two continentsD
-
And scornful of the peace that fliesE
Thy angry winds and sullen skiesE
-
Thou drawest all things small or greatA
To thee beside the Western GateA
-
O lion's whelp that hidest fastF
In jungle growth of spire and mastF
-
I know thy cunning and thy greedG
Thy hard high lust and willful deedG
-
And all thy glory loves to tellH
Of specious gifts materialI
-
Drop down O Fleecy Fog and hideJ
Her skeptic sneer and all her prideJ
-
Wrap her O Fog in gown and hoodK
Of her Franciscan BrotherhoodK
-
Hide me her faults her sin and blameL
With thy gray mantle cloak her shameL
-
So shall she cowled sit and prayM
Till morning bears her sins awayM
-
Then rise O Fleecy Fog and raiseN
The glory of her coming daysN
-
Be as the cloud that flecks the seasO
Above her smoky argosiesO
-
When forms familiar shall give placeO
To stranger speech and newer faceO
-
When all her throes and anxious fearsO
Lie hushed in the repose of yearsO
-
When Art shall raise and Culture liftP
The sensual joys and meaner thriftP
-
And all fulfilled the vision weQ
Who watch and wait shall never seeQ
-
Who in the morning of her raceO
Toiled fair or meanly in our placeO
-
But yielding to the common lotR
Lie unrecorded and forgotR
