Relieving Guard Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDC ECFC GDHD

Thomas Starr King Obiit MarchA
-
-
Came the relief What sentry hoB
How passed the night through thy long wakingC
Cold cheerless dark as may befitD
The hour before the dawn is breakingC
-
No sight no sound No nothing saveE
The plover from the marshes callingC
And in yon western sky aboutF
An hour ago a star was fallingC
-
A star There's nothing strange in thatG
No nothing but above the thicketD
Somehow it seemed to me that GodH
Somewhere had just relieved a picketD
