California's Greeting To Seward Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI JKJK LMLI NONO POPQ

We know him well no need of praiseA
Or bonfire from the windy hillB
To light to softer paths and waysA
The world worn man we honor stillB
-
No need to quote the truths he spokeC
That burned through years of war and shameD
While History carves with surer strokeC
Across our map his noonday fameD
-
No need to bid him show the scarsE
Of blows dealt by the Scaean gateF
Who lived to pass its shattered barsE
And see the foe capitulateG
-
Who lived to turn his slower feetH
Toward the western setting sunI
To see his harvest all completeH
His dream fulfilled his duty doneI
-
The one flag streaming from the poleJ
The one faith borne from sea to seaK
For such a triumph and such goalJ
Poor must our human greeting beK
-
Ah rather that the conscious landL
In simpler ways salute the ManM
The tall pines bowing where they standL
The bared head of El CapitanI
-
The tumult of the waterfallsN
Pohono's kerchief in the breezeO
The waving from the rocky wallsN
The stir and rustle of the treesO
-
Till lapped in sunset skies of hopeP
In sunset lands by sunset seasO
The Young World's Premier treads the slopeP
Of sunset years in calm and peaceQ
