Malvern HillA
-
-
After the men were ordered to lie down a white rabbit which had been hopping hither and thither over the field swept by grape and musketry took refuge among the skirmishers in the breast of a corporalB
Report of the Battle of Malvern HillA
-
Bunny lying in the grassC
Saw the shining column passC
Saw the starry banner flyD
Saw the chargers fret and fumeE
Saw the flapping hat and plumeE
Saw them with his moist and shyD
Most unspeculative eyeD
Thinking only in the dewF
That it was a fine reviewF
-
Till a flash not all of steelG
Where the rolling caissons wheelG
Brought a rumble and a roarH
Rolling down that velvet floorH
And like blows of autumn flailI
Sharply threshed the iron hailI
-
Bunny thrilled by unknown fearsJ
Raised his soft and pointed earsJ
Mumbled his prehensile lipK
Quivered his pulsating hipK
As the sharp vindictive yellL
Rose above the screaming shellL
Thought the world and all its menM
All the charging squadrons meantN
All were rabbit hunters thenM
All to capture him intentN
Bunny was not much to blameO
Wiser folk have thought the sameO
Wiser folk who think they spyD
Every ill begins with ID
-
Wildly panting here and thereP
Bunny sought the freer airP
Till he hopped below the hillA
And saw lying close and stillA
Men with muskets in their handsQ
Never Bunny understandsQ
That hypocrisy of sleepR
In the vigils grim they keepR
As recumbent on that spotS
They elude the level shotS
-
One a grave and quiet manT
Thinking of his wife and childU
Far beyond the RapidanT
Where the Androscoggin smiledU
Felt the little rabbit creepR
Nestling by his arm and sideV
Wakened from strategic sleepR
To that soft appeal repliedV
Drew him to his blackened breastW
And But you have guessed the restW
-
Softly o'er that chosen pairP
Omnipresent Love and CareP
Drew a mightier Hand and ArmX
Shielding them from every harmX
Right and left the bullets wavedY
Saved the saviour for the savedY
-
Who believes that equal graceZ
God extends in every placeZ
Little difference he scansA2
'Twixt a rabbit's God and man'sA2
