Address - The Opening Of The California Theatre, San Francisco, January 19, 1870 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCCC CCDDEEFF GGHHIIJJ CCKLCCMM NNFFOOPP QQRRSSHH

Brief words when actions wait are wellA
The prompter's hand is on his bellA
The coming heroes lovers kingsB
Are idly lounging at the wingsB
Behind the curtain's mystic foldC
The glowing future lies unrolledC
And yet one moment for the PastC
One retrospect the first and lastC
-
The world's a stage the Master saidC
To night a mightier truth is readC
Not in the shifting canvas screenD
The flash of gas or tinsel sheenD
Not in the skill whose signal callsE
From empty boards baronial hallsE
But fronting sea and curving bayF
Behold the players and the playF
-
Ah friends beneath your real skiesG
The actor's short lived triumph diesG
On that broad stage of empire wonH
Whose footlights were the setting sunH
Whose flats a distant background roseI
In trackless peaks of endless snowsI
Here genius bows and talent waitsJ
To copy that but One createsJ
-
Your shifting scenes the league of sandC
An avenue by ocean spannedC
The narrow beach of straggling tentsK
A mile of stately monumentsL
Your standard lo a flag unfurledC
Whose clinging folds clasp half the worldC
This is your drama built on factsM
With twenty years between the actsM
-
One moment more if here we raiseN
The oft sung hymn of local praiseN
Before the curtain facts must swayF
Here waits the moral of your playF
Glassed in the poet's thought you viewO
What money can yet cannot doO
The faith that soars the deeds that shineP
Above the gold that builds the shrineP
-
And oh when others take our placeQ
And Earth's green curtain hides our faceQ
Ere on the stage so silent nowR
The last new hero makes his bowR
So may our deeds recalled once moreS
In Memory's sweet but brief encoreS
Down all the circling ages runH
With the world's plaudit of Well doneH
