Saint Kavin was a gentlemanA
He came from TipperaryB
And woman was the only thingC
That ever made him scaryB
-
For Kavin was a tender youthD
And he was very simpleE
He feared the wiles of maiden smilesF
And fainted at a dimpleE
-
But when Kathleen at seventeenG
Came down the street one morningC
The luck of man came over himH
And took him without warningC
-
Afraid to meet a foolish fateI
By green sea or by dry landJ
He fled away without delayK
And sought a desert islandL
-
But even there he felt despairM
For happiness is onlyB
The hope of doing something elseN
And he was very lonelyB
-
He vowed to lead a life of prayerM
Because that he had lost herO
And every time he thought of herO
He said a Pater nosterO
-
Yet hard it is for man to changeP
The less love for the greaterO
And every time he reached AmenQ
He must go back to PaterO
-
And so he grew a year or twoR
Disconsolate and holyB
While friends he'd known long since had grownS
Papas and roly polyB
-
Until one day one blessed dayK
A moping like a HindooK
He saw Kathleen in mournful mienG
A passing by his windowK
-
He threw away his rosaryB
His Paters and his AvesN
For love is stronger than the windK
That wafts a thousand naviesN
-
The holy man went forth to warO
But not against the devilE
He led the maid within for shadeK
And treated her most civilE
-
He gave her cakes he gave her wineT
He set his best before herO
And then invited her to dineT
Thenceforth with her adorerO
-
Her little head went round for joyU
She tried to kick the rafterO
So Kavin was a saint no moreO
And happy ever afterO
