Comrades comrades have me buriedA
Like a warrior of the seaB
With a flag across my breastC
And my sword upon my kneeB
-
Steering out from vanished headlandsB
For a harbor on no chartD
With the winter in the riggingE
With the ice wind in my heartD
-
Down the bournless slopes of sea roomF
With the long gray wake behindG
I have sailed my cruiser steadyB
With no pilot but the windG
-
Battling with relentless piratesB
From the lower seas of DoomF
I have kept the colors flyingE
Through the roar of drift and gloomF
-
Scudding where the shadow foemenB
Hang about us grim and starkH
Broken spars and shredded canvasB
We are racing for the darkH
-
Sped and blown abaft the sunsetI
Like a shriek the storm has caughtJ
But the helm is lashed to windwardK
And the sails are sheeted tautL
-
Comrades comrades have me buriedA
Like a warrior of the nightM
I can hear the bell buoy callingE
Down below the harbor lightM
-
Steer in shoreward loose the signalN
The last watch has been cut shortO
Speak me kindly to the islesmenB
When we make the foreign portO
-
We shall make it ere the morningE
Rolls the fog from strait and bluffP
Where the offing crimsons eastwardK
There is anchorage enoughP
-
How I wander in my dreamingE
Are we northing nearer homeQ
Or outbound for fresh adventureR
On the reeling plains of foamQ
-
North I think it is my comradesB
Where one heart beat counts for tenB
Where the loving hand is loyalN
And the women's sons are menB
-
Where the red auroras trembleN
When the polar night is stillS
Lighting home the worn seafarersB
To their haven in the hillS
-
Comrades comrades have me buriedA
Like a warrior of the NorthT
Lower me the long boat stay meB
In your arms and bear me forthT
-
Lay me in the sheets and row meB
With the tiller in my handU
Row me in below the beaconB
Where my sea dogs used to landU
-
Has your captain lost his cunningE
After leading you so farV
Row me your last league my sea kingsB
It is safe within the barV
-
Shoulder me and house me hillwardU
Where the field lark makes his bedU
So the gulls can wheel above meB
All day long when I am deadU
-
Where the keening wind can find meB
With the April rain for guideU
And come crooning her old storiesB
Of the kingdoms of the tideU
-
Comrades comrades have me buriedU
Like a warrior of the sunB
I have carried my sealed ordersB
Till the last command is doneB
-
Kiss me on the cheek for courageW
There is none to greet me homeQ
Then farewell to your old loverR
Of the thunder of the foamQ
-
For the grass is full of slumberR
In the twilight world for meB
And my tired hands are slackenedU
From their toiling on the seaB
