Daughter daughter marry no manA
Though a king's son come to wooB
If he be not more than blessing or banA
To the secret soul of youB
-
'Tis the King's son indeed I weenA
And he left me even but nowA
And he shall make me a dazzling queenA
With a gold crown on my browA
-
And are you one that a golden crownA
Or the lust of a name can lureC
You had better wed with a country clownA
And keep your young heart pureC
-
Mother the King has sworn and saidD
That his son shall wed but meE
And I must gang to the prince's bedD
Or a traitor I shall beE
-
Oh what care you for an old man's wrathF
Or what care you for a kingG
I had rather you fled on an outlaw's pathF
A rebel a hunted thingG
-
Mother it is my father's willH
For the King has promised him fairI
A goodly earldom of hollow and hillH
And a coronet to wearI
-
Then woe is worth a father's nameJ
For it names your dourest foeK
I had rather you came the child of shameJ
Than to have you fathered soK
-
Mother I shall have gold enowA
Though love be never mineA
To buy all else that the world can showK
Of good and fair and fineA
-
Oh what care you for a prince's goldL
Or the key of a kingdom's tillH
I had rather see you a harlot boldL
That sins of her own free willH
-
For I have been wife for the stomach's sakeM
And I know whereof I sayN
A harlot is sold for a passing slakeM
But a wife is sold for ayeO
-
Body and soul for a lifetime sellP
And the price of the sale shall beE
That you shall be harlot and slave as wellP
Until Death set you freeE
