Nocturne: In Provence. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCBCDED DFDGHFHII FJFKFFFKK

The blue night like an angel came into the roomA
Came through the open window from the silent skyB
Down trellised stairs of moonlight into the dear roomA
As if a whisper breathed of some divine one nighB
The nightingales like brooks of song in ParadiseC
Gurgled their serene rapture to the silent skyB
Like springs of laughter bubbling up in ParadiseC
The serene nightingales along the riversideD
Purled low in every tree their star cool melodiesE
Of joy in every tree along the riversideD
-
Did the vain garments melt in music from your sideD
Did you rise from them as a lily flowers i' the airF
But you were there before me like the Night's own brideD
I dared not call you mine So still and tall you wereG
I never dreamed that you were mine I never dreamedH
I loved you I forgot I loved you You were airF
And music and the shadows that you stood in seemedH
Like priests that keep their sombre vigil round a shrineI
Like sombre priests that watch about a glorious shrineI
-
And then you stepped into the moonlight and laid bareF
The wonder of your body to the night and stoodJ
With all the stars of heaven looking at you thereF
As simply as a saint might bare her soul to GodK
As simply as a saint might bathe in lakes of prayerF
Stood with the holy moonlight falling on you thereF
Until I thought that in a glory unawareF
I had seen a soul stand forth and bare itself to GodK
A saintly soul lay bare its innocence to GodK
