To obey as he taught them how | B |

But both had the wild wild heart | E |
And God's calm will was their burning will | F |
And the gist of their toil was art | E |

They made the moon and the belted stars | G |
They set the sun to ride | H |
They loosed the girdle and veil of the sea | I |
The wind and the purple tide | H |

Both flower and beast beneath their hands | J |
To beauty and speed outgrew | K |
The furious fumbling hand of Hack | L |
And the glorying hand of Hew | K |

Then fire and clay they fashioned a man | M |
And painted him rosy brown | N |
And God himself blew hard in his eyes | O |
Let them burn till they smoulder down | N |

And There said Hack and There thought Hew | K |
We'll rest for our toil is done | P |
But Nay the Master Workman said | Q |
For your toil is just begun | P |

Shall serve me anew as man | M |
Till I compass the dream that is in my heart | E |
And perfect the vaster plan | M |

And still the craftsman over his craft | R |
In the vague white light of dawn | S |
With God's calm will for his burning will | F |
While the mounting day comes on | T |

Yearning wind swift indolent wild | U |
Toils with those shadowy two | K |
The faltering restless hand of Hack | L |
And the tireless hand of Hew | K |
