There paused to shut the doorA
A fellow called the WindB
With mystery beforeA
And reticence behindB
-
A portal waits me tooC
In the glad house of springD
One day I shall pass throughC
And leave you wonderingD
-
It lies beyond the margeE
Of evening or of primeF
Silent and dim and largeE
The gateway of all timeF
-
There troop by night and dayG
My brothers of the fieldH
And I shall know the wayG
Their woodsongs have revealedH
-
The dusk will hold some traceI
Of all my radiant crewC
Who vanished to that placeI
Ephemeral as dewC
-
Into the twilight dunJ
Blue moth and dragon flyK
Adventuring aloneL
Shall be more brave than IK
-
There innocents shall bloomM
And the white cherry treeN
With birch and willow plumeM
To strew the road for meN
-
The wilding orioles thenO
Shall make the golden airP
Heavy with joy againO
And the dark heart shall dareP
-
Resume the old desireQ
The exigence of springD
To be the orange fireQ
That tips the world's gray wingD
-
And the lone wood bird HarkR
The whippoorwill night longS
Threshing the summer darkR
With his dim flail of songS
-
Shall be the lyric liftT
When all my senses creepU
To bear me through the riftT
In the blue range of sleepU
-
And so I pass beyondV
The solace of your handW
But ah so brave and fondV
Within that morrow landW
-
Where deed and daring failX
But joy forevermoreQ
Shall tremble and prevailX
Against the narrow doorQ
-
Where sorrow knocks too lateY
And grief is overdueC
Beyond the granite gateY
There will be thoughts of youC
