There's a schooner out from KingsportA
Through the morning's dazzle gleamB
Snoring down the Bay of FundyA
With a norther on her beamB
-
How the tough wind springs to wrestleC
When the tide is on the floodA
And between them stands young daringD
Arnold master of the ScudA
-
He is only Martin's youngsterE
To the Minas coasting fleetA
Twelve year old and full of SatanF
As a nut is full of meatA
-
With a wake of froth behind himG
And the gold green waste beforeH
Just as though the sea this morningD
Were his boat pond by the doorH
-
Legs a straddle grips the tillerE
This young waif of the old seaI
When the wind comes harder onlyI
Laughs Hurrah and holds her freeI
-
Little wonder as you watch himG
With the dash in his blue eyeJ
Long ago his father called himG
Arnold Master on the slyJ
-
While his mother's heart forebodedA
Reckless father makes rash sonF
So to day the schooner carriesK
Just these two whose will is oneF
-
Now the wind grows moody shiftingD
Point by point into the eastA
Wing and wing the Scud is flyingD
With her scuppers full of yeastA
-
And the father's older wisdomL
On the sea line has descriedA
Like a stealthy cloud bank makingD
Up to windward with the tideA
-
Those tall navies of disasterE
The pale squadrons of the fogM
That maraud this gray world borderE
Without pilot chart or logN
-
Ranging wanton as maroonersK
From Minudie to MananF
Heave to and we'll reef my masterE
Cries he when no will of manF
-
Spills the foresail but a clumsyK
Wind flaw with a hand like stoneF
Hurls the boom round In an instantA
Arnold Master there aloneF
-
Sees a crushed corpse shot to seawardA
With the gray doom in its faceK
And the climbing foam receives itA
To its everlasting placeK
-
What does Arnold Master think youO
Whimper like a child for dreadA
That's not Arnold Foulest weatherE
Strongest sailors ever bredA
-
And this slip of taut sea faringP
Grows a man who throttles fearQ
Let the storm and dark in spite nowF
Do their worst with valor hereR
-
Not a reef and not a shiverE
While the wind jeers in her shroudsK
And the flauts of foam and sea fogM
Swarm upon her deck in crowdsK
-
Flies the Scud like a mad racerE
And with iron in his frownF
Holding hard by wrath and dreadnoughtA
Arnold Master rides her downF
-
Let the taffrail shriek through foam headsK
Let the licking seas go glutA
Elsewhere their old hunger baffledA
Arnold's making for the GutA
-
Cleft sheer down the sea wall mountainsK
Give that one port on the coastA
Made the Basin lies in sunshineF
Missed the little Scud is lostA
-
Come now fog horn let your warningD
Rip the wind to starboard thereS
Suddenly that burly throatedA
Welcome ploughs the cumbered airS
-
The young master hauls a littleC
Crowds her up and sheets her homeT
Heading for the narrow entryK
Whence the safety signals comeL
-
Then the wind lulls and an eddyK
Tells of ledges where awayU
Veers the Scud sheet free sun breakingD
Through the rifts and there's the bayU
-
Like a bird in from the storm beatA
As the summer sun goes downF
Slows the schooner to her mooringsK
By the wharf at Digby townF
-
All the world next morning wonderedA
Largest letters there it stoodA
Storm in Fundy A Boy's DaringD
Arnold Master of the ScudA
