Today through your Easter marketA
In the lazy Southern sunB
I strolled with hands in pocketsC
Past the flower stalls one by oneB
-
Indolent dreamy readyD
For anything to amuseE
Shyfoot out for a rambleF
In his oldest hat and shoesE
-
Roses creamy and yellowG
Azaleas crimson and whiteH
And the flaky fresh carnationsI
My Orient of delightH
-
Masses and banks of blossomJ
That dazzle and summon the eyeK
Till the buyers are half bewilderedL
To know what they want Not IK
-
Who would not rather be artistM
And slip through the crowd unseenN
To gather it all in a pictureO
And guess what the faces meanN
-
So down through the chaffering darkiesI
I pass to the sidewalk's endP
Through the smiling gingham bonnetsI
With their small farm stuff to vendP
-
When hello my dreamer suddenB
As call at the dead of nightP
What sets your pulses a quiverO
What sets your fancy alightP
-
Sure of it Mayflowers mayflowersI
Scent of the North in springQ
Out in the vernal distanceI
Heart of me whither a wingQ
-
Give me some Clutch the first handfulR
Hungering rover of earthS
How I devour and kiss themT
Beauties that brought me to birthS
-
Away in the great north countryD
The land of the lonely sunB
Where God has few for his fellowsI
And the wolves of the snowdrift runB
-
Once more to the frost bound valleyD
Comes April with rain in her jarU
I can hear the vesper sparrowG
Under the silver starU
-
And many and dear and graciousI
Are the dreams that walk at my sideP
From the land of the lingering shadowsI
As out of the throng I strideP
-
Oh well for you mere onlookerO
Who drift through the world's great martP
But we of the human sorrowG
Have a joy beyond your artP
