Now the joys of the road are chiefly theseA
A crimson touch on the hard wood treesA
-
A vagrant's morning wide and blueB
In early fall when the wind walks tooB
-
A shadowy highway cool and brownC
Alluring up and enticing downC
-
From rippled water to dappled swampD
From purple glory to scarlet pompD
-
The outward eye the quiet willE
And the striding heart from hill to hillE
-
The tempter apple over the fenceF
The cobweb bloom on the yellow quinceG
-
The palish asters along the woodH
A lyric touch of the solitudeI
-
An open hand an easy shoeB
And a hope to make the day go throughB
-
Another to sleep with and a thirdJ
To wake me up at the voice of a birdJ
-
The resonant far listening mornK
And the hoarse whisper of the cornK
-
The crickets mourning their comrades lostL
In the night's retreat from the gathering frostL
-
Or is it their slogan plaintive and shrillE
As they beat on their corselets valiant stillE
-
A hunger fit for the kings of the seaM
And a loaf of bread for Dickon and meM
-
A thirst like that of the Thirsty SwordN
And a jug of cider on the boardN
-
An idle noon a bubbling springO
The sea in the pine tops murmuringO
-
A scrap of gossip at the ferryM
A comrade neither glum nor merryM
-
Asking nothing revealing naughtP
But minting his words from a fund of thoughtP
-
A keeper of silence eloquentQ
Needy yet royally well contentR
-
Of the mettled breed yet abhorring strifeS
And full of the mellow juice of lifeS
-
A taster of wine with an eye for a maidT
Never too bold and never afraidT
-
Never heart whole never heart sickU
These are the things I worship in DickU
-
No fidget and no reformer justV
A calm observer of ought and mustV
-
A lover of books but a reader of manW
No cynic and no charlatanX
-
Who never defers and never demandsY
But smiling takes the world in his handsY
-
Seeing it good as when God first sawZ
And gave it the weight of his will for lawZ
-
And O the joy that is never wonX
But follows and follows the journeying sunX
-
By marsh and tide by meadow and streamA2
A will o' the wind a light o' dreamA2
-
Delusion afar delight anearM
From morrow to morrow from year to yearM
-
A jack o' lantern a fairy fireM
A dare a bliss and a desireM
-
The racy smell of the forest loamB2
When the stealthy sad heart leaves go homeB2
-
O leaves O leaves I am one with youB
Of the mould and the sun and the wind and the dewB
-
The broad gold wake of the afternoonC2
The silent fleck of the cold new moonC2
-
The sound of the hollow sea's releaseD2
From stormy tumult to starry peaceD2
-
With only another league to wendE2
And two brown arms at the journey's endE2
-
These are the joys of the open roadF2
For him who travels without a loadF2
