Oh but life went gayly gaylyA
In the house of IdiedailyA
-
There were always throats to singB
Down the river banks with springB
-
When the stir of heart's desireC
Set the sapling's heart on fireC
-
Bobolincolns in the meadowsD
Leisure in the purple shadowsD
-
Till the poppies without numberC
Bowed their heads in crimson slumberC
-
And the twilight came to coverC
Every unreluctant loverC
-
Not a night but some brown maidenE
Bettered all the dusk she strayed inF
-
While the roses in her hairG
Bankrupted oblivion thereG
-
Oh but life went gayly gaylyA
In the house of IdiedailyA
-
But this hostelry The BarrowH
With its chambers bare and narrowH
-
Mean ill windowed damp and wormyI
Where the silence makes you squirmyI
-
And the guests are never seen toJ
Is a vile place a mere lean toJ
-
Not a traveller speaks well ofK
Even worse than I heard tell ofK
-
Mouldy ramshackle and foulA
What a dwelling for a soulA
-
Oh but life went gayly gaylyA
In the house of IdiedailyA
-
There the hearth was always warmI
From the slander of the stormI
-
There your comrade was your neighborC
Living on to morrow's laborC
-
And the board was always steamingB
Though Sir Ringlets might be dreamingB
-
Not a plate but scoffed at porridgeL
Not a cup but floated borageL
-
There were always jugs of sherryM
Waiting for the makers merryM
-
And the dark Burgundian wineN
That would make a fool divineN
-
Oh but life went gayly gaylyA
In the house of IdiedailyA
