Hem And Haw Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JKFK LMNM OBPB QRSR

Hem and Haw were the sons of sinA
Created to shally and shirkB
Hem lay 'round and Haw looked onC
While God did all the workB
-
Hem was a fogy and Haw was a prigD
For both had the dull dull mindE
And whenever they found a thing to doF
They yammered and went it blindE
-
Hem was the father of bigots and boresG
As the sands of the sea were theyH
And Haw was the father of all the tribeI
Who criticise to dayH
-
But God was an artist from the firstJ
And knew what be was aboutK
While over his shoulder sneered these twoF
And advised him to rub it outK
-
They prophesied ruin ere man was madeL
Such folly must surely failM
And when he was done Do you think my LordN
He's better without a tailM
-
And still in the honest working worldO
With posture and hint and smirkB
These sons of the devil are standing byP
While Man does all the workB
-
They balk endeavor and baffle reformQ
In the sacred name of lawR
And over the quavering voice of HemS
Is the droning voice of HawR
